Utilised for centuries by the royal navy the master ropemakers ropery was once used to produce up to 5000 tonnes of cordage for its fleet of nearly 1000 ships.
A highlight of the historic dockyard chatham is the ropery and its master ropemakers.
In 1808 the ropery employed 27 apprentices to undertake spinning tarring and dividing yard and finally laying.
At over 1 100 feet long the ropery is a unique and vibrant 19 th century working ropery.
At the heart of the historic dockyard chatham master ropemakers maintains a process of ropemaking that dates back on this site for more than 400 years.
